On Thursday, October 18, Patrick J. Geary, the Andrew W. Mellon Professor of Medieval History at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, will deliver a public lecture titled "Exploring Medieval Migration through Ancient DNA: Adding Genomics to the Historian’s Tool Box" (6:00 p.m., Northrop 122). Professor Geary is one of North America’s most distinguished historians. Before moving to Princeton, he was Director of the Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies at UCLA and Director of the Medieval Institute at Notre Dame. He is currently leading a team at the Institute for Advanced Study that is working on how to harness DNA analysis to address historical problems. His lecture will discuss how the science of genomics can throw light on the complex migration patterns that characterized the end of the Roman Empire and the beginning of the Middle Ages. The lecture is jointly sponsored by the History Department and the Institute for Medieval Studies, with generous support from the Department’s Gorham Fund.
